Prior to launching Critical Incident Solutions, I was the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team Leader for two major airlines in Canada.
While implementing and managing the CISM program for Canadian Airlines, I soon realized a system was needed to assist with the management of 130 team member profiles, as well as track deployments, training, crisis interventions, incidents, and follow-ups. I went in search of software dedicated to performing these functions and to my amazement none was available! Until I could find a product that suited my needs, I decided to store all of the team information in a small database. It wasn't perfect but it was a start.
In speaking and networking with crisis team leaders from airlines around the world, I discovered I was not alone. Effective crisis management was a challenge we all faced. Some teams were using a non automated process and others used a combination of ‘off the shelf' software applications.
During a critical event, crisis teams need an effective tool they can depend on. The use of software applications, not specifically designed for a crisis, can decentralize data and limit user accessibility. As a result, the brunt of administrative tasks usually falls to one or two team members. This intense responsibility can often lead to burnout.
On September 11th, 2001, I coordinated the deployment efforts for Air Canada's CISM Team. It was a defining moment. I recognized this situation required a crisis management system to help me carry out my duties. I fell back on the ‘imperfect' system I had used at Canadian Airlines. Without it, managing deployments, interventions, and reporting would have been very difficult.
Through out the design and development of CISMCARE, I drew from my experiences as a CISM leader. CISMCARE had to be highly functional, web-based, yet user friendly or its effectiveness would be limited. CISM team members are very fluid and for this reason, CISMCARE needed to have a reasonably short learning curve. If the software is too complicated, volunteers become frustrated, lose interest, and stressed.
CISMCARE was developed with flexibility in mind. Our effective and efficient crisis management tool can be implemented by any company, organization, or industry.
